The Best Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis (and What to Look For)

Jul 13, 2026  ·  5 min read

If your first steps in the morning feel like stepping on a bruise, the shoes you wear all day matter more than almost anything else you can change quickly. The plantar fascia is the thick band of tissue along the bottom of your foot, and the right footwear takes load off it while it settles down. Here is what to look for.

What makes a shoe good for plantar fasciitis

  • Firm arch support that matches your foot. The support should hold the arch, not just feel soft. A shoe that twists easily in the middle usually isn't supportive enough.
  • A cushioned, slightly raised heel. A small heel-to-toe drop reduces tension on the fascia and the calf. Dead-flat shoes often make symptoms worse.
  • A structured heel counter. The firm cup around the heel should resist being squeezed, keeping the heel stable so the foot doesn't roll.
  • A sole that bends only at the toes. Press the toe up toward the laces; it should flex at the ball of the foot, not fold in half.
  • Replace worn-out shoes. Support breaks down long before the upper looks worn. If a pair has more than a year of regular use on it, it may be part of the problem.

Why shoes and inserts help

Good shoes and a supportive insert don't fix anything on their own, but they reduce the repeated pull on the fascia with every step, which is what keeps it irritated. Paired with calf and plantar-fascia stretching and a gradual return to activity, they help a large share of cases settle over weeks to months.

When to have a podiatrist take a look

If supportive shoes, stretching, and over-the-counter inserts haven't helped after a fair trial, or if the pain is getting in the way of work and daily life, it's worth a professional evaluation. A podiatrist can confirm it really is plantar fasciitis, check your foot mechanics, and tailor next steps, from custom orthotics to other in-office options, to your specific foot.

Heel pain that lingers usually has a fixable cause. The sooner it's looked at, the simpler it tends to be to turn around.
